Accident & Third Party Liability cover

Where fully comprehensive cover isn’t appropriate for practical or financial reasons, many pet owners opt for basic accident cover and/or third party liability cover* as a very sensible alternative to having no cover at all, both of which are available through VIP at very competitive rates. *Dogs & Horses only

VIP is here to make sure that whichever policy you choose for your pet you have all the information you need to make a well-informed choice. So take some time to look at the type and level of cover you will need, its well worth it. Your requirements are unique to you and your pet and making sure that you have the right policy is of paramount importance.

12-month cover

This is the most widely available and usually the least costly. There is a place for 12-month cover but it isn’t always ideal, particularly for younger dogs, and it’s important to be aware of its limitations as it will only cover each condition up to a maximum amount or for a maximum of 12 months post diagnosis, whichever comes first. This type of cover tends to be fairly practical in terms of cost and can be useful where a significant amount of money is needed quickly, in the event of an accident or major surgery for example, but can result in major difficulty where a long-term illness is diagnosed. All too often 12-month policyholders are unaware of the time limit on claims leaving many with ongoing health problems to pay for, which will not be covered elsewhere.

Maximum benefit cover

This is the next step up, still offering a maximum amount per condition but with no time limit so it will cover for ongoing problems, the insurer simply setting a limit on how much the company will pay for each non-related condition. It’s important to be aware with this type of cover that, although insurance companies don’t set out to avoid paying out on claims, it is often a matter of dispute between policyholder and insurance company as to which problems can and cannot be linked to one another. Good examples of this are: cruciate ligament surgery, where pet owners often view a subsequent rupture in a different leg as a separate issue whilst insurers will say it is the same condition, or arthritis following a broken leg even years after the event will often be linked to the original injury. So, this type of insurance can represent a good value alternative to lifetime cover but only within the guidelines set out in the terms and conditions of the policy.

Lifetime cover

This is the most comprehensive pet insurance option, offering a limit in vet fee cover per year, which is simply reinstated each year without exclusion. This type of cover offers the greatest level of protection, particularly in the event of any long term, chronic or recurring disorders and is also the option that offers the least room for dispute in the event of claims. A lifetime policy is what we would recommend ideally for all pets and the peace of mind offered by this type of cover makes it the obvious choice and particularly for youngsters. For at least their first two years our pets are a bit of an unknown quantity, with years ahead during which the possibilities for potential claims are endless. VIP believes that the difference in cost for lifetime cover as opposed to the alternatives is negligible compared to the disappointment often faced by less comprehensive policyholders when an expensive, long term problem arises.
